Kon Tum

Kon Tum

Kon Tum Province lies in the Central Highlands region of Vietnam and shares borders with Laos and Cambodia. The city is relatively relaxed place with quiet streets and some scenic rivers nearby. The surrounding area is known for its indigenous hill tribes including Bahnar, Sedang and Jarai.

As with most places, the region saw a lot of combat during the U.S. War where hundreds of American B52 raids took place during the Spring of 1972.

Our Trip

We arrived in Kon Tum with no real agenda other than to ride around the hill tribe areas and up to the Laos/Cambodia boarder (see post Ride Day 21: Kon Tum Loop).

We were just planning to stay for two nights but as can sometimes happen, the best times can come out of something very unplanned – we ended up meeting a very friendly family while getting our bikes repaired who we ended up spending a lot of time with and extended our time there so that we could join them at a family gathering that they invited us to. Over the four days we were there we caught up for early morning breakfasts, a lunch at a delicious restaurant and the family occassion that we were invited to.

The children in the family had excellent English as did some of the adults, they all were really excited to talk to us and practise their skills – it really got tested during one afternoon of Karaoke!
